Quick Storage Tips

This page provides quick tips and tricks to help with the following

How to store your belongings in a storage space.

Renovating or relocating and thinking of storing your belongings? Properly store things in such a way that you ensure they stay in a good condition once you want to retrieve them.

  • Don’t cram everything in the smallest storage unit you can find. Choose the right storage. Think reasonably about the storage space you require. Remember that if things are tightly packed and stacked, they can get damaged over time.
  • Make an inventory listof all your belongings and mark the boxes properly.
  • Group similar category boxes together. Should you come looking to take one or two boxes out of storage, this makes it easier, and you don’t have to search through everything.
  • Leave some walking spaceto manoeuvre around the boxes to avoid unnecessary moving and shuffling of the boxes.
  • Use strong and durable boxes. Flimsy or damaged boxes might tear quicker, and insects might gain access through damaged boxes, destroying your belongings.
  • Clean the items prior to storage. If your items are clean, it will attract fewer insects, less mould etc.
  • Wrapped precious items. Whether they are fragile or not, any precious item should be properly wrapped and packaged to protect it.

How to prevent rodents from wreaking havoc in your storage unit.

How to prevent rodents from wreaking havoc in your storage unit.

Rodents are everywhere, and although Censtore Storage Facilities does their utmost to prevent this, there is still a possibility that rodents might wreak havoc to your items over a period while storing. Especially if you plan to keep your items in storage for a while and you don’t come around regularly. It is better to be prepared and prevent it from happening from the start by focusing on the following:

  • Check the storage unit. We inspect our units regularly, but nature has a funny way of finding a way in. Before you start storing, please double check the unit/space for any possible entry points. Alert us and we will make sure it is closed off. We do everything in our power to ensure your items are fully secured.
  • Choose your packaging container wisely. If you plan on long term storage, boxes are no good. Rather opt for plastic containers that can seal properly.
  • Make sure everything is clean. Tins or items with food or crumbs in will attract unwanted guests.
  • Use a natural repellent among your things. Smells of peppermint and lavender are irritating smells to rodents, so you might want to use these essential oils as repellents in your storage unit.
  • Wrap or tightly cover your Mattresses and furniture in durable plastic. Rodents chew through fabric and make nests. Protect your upholstered items and matrasses properly.

Do’s and Don’ts of Self-Storage

Whether it is long-term or short-term storage you are considering, there are a few things to bear in mind:

Do:

  • Choose the right size storage unit to house the correct number of items.
  • Choose a reliable storage facility who has enough security.
  • Record all the items in a proper inventory list before you store.
  • Use plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes if you plan on long-term storage.
  • Do wrap valuables, fragile items, upholstered furniture, paintings, mattresses etc.
  • Do properly clean all items before storage.
  • Do leave space inside the unit to manoeuvre around easier.
  • Do insure your stored items and do inform your insurance that you will be storing these.
  • Do use a reliable, safe and durable lock to lock up the unit.

Don’t:

  • Don’t store any food.
  • Don’t pack containers randomly. Rather focus on grouping and categorically packing things.
  • Don’t pack the storage unit without planning which containers you might want easier access to.
  • Don’t store very valuable or high-priced items. Although we have 24-hour security and do our utmost to secure the units, we still live in South Africa where crime is high.
  • Don’t overlook the possible threat of pests. Again, we do everything in our power to prevent this, but nature has it’s way of getting in.
  • Don’t give anyone access permission to your unit without you accompanying them.
